Facts Marino
released his first true solo effort in '82 on Maze Records called
JUGGERNAUT. Though nothing truly ground-breaking, again Marino's
incredible guitar virtuosity was displayed, most noteable in numbers
like the title-track. DOUBLE LIVE came out in '83 as a Mahogany Rush
record. Taken from gigs done on the east coast, it included the epic
"Strange Dreams", "You Got Livin" and "Rock Me Baby". The band also
showcased their blues roots with a rendition of "Who Do You Love".
Marino soon decided the band's sound was no longer welcome and now
without a label again, disbanded the group.
Facts Mahogany Rush has been accused of “ripping off” the Hendrix style of music. Although a concert repertoire includes Hendrix material as well as other artists’ work, and Mahogany Rushs' own work. Marino defends his band with the following, “Face it, there are a lot of loud trios and flashy guitarists around these days, so I’ve got to put a little extra effort into the music so that there can be no mistaking the sound of Mahogany Rush”. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() As a teen-ager Frank's heavy experimentation with LSD, would soon land him in a hospital. He has said that "This experience became the basis of everything that I was to do in music, including the name Mahogany Rush, which was a description I would use to describe a certain sensation that I was having on the trip. The artwork on the albums, Child of the Novelty and Strange Universe are an artist's rendition of my trip as told by me to the artist, Ivan Schwartz, who has since passed away". while recuperating from a bad trip at the hospital, he learned how to play guitar. It was only a few short years later after many different band members, that Frank Marino recorded his first album. "In the early years I played in a church and even on a float in a parade. I did mostly cover songs by The Doors, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Cream, Johnny Winter, The Beatles and even The Grateful Dead as well as a few originals that I had written". Members have included bassist Paul Harwood, drummer Jimmy Ayoub, and guitarist Vince Marino (Frank's brother), the band has continued with other members, always under Frank Marino's leadership. After 1980, the group toured as Frank Marino's Mahogany Rush, and after Jim Ayoub left the group, it simply became Frank Marino. After a long absence, the band toured the United States in October 2006. Buried beneath the blazing riffs Marino had already made a name for himself with what was the only single "A New Rock and Roll". Though it too failed to make a dent in the Canadian market, the airlplay given it in the U.S. landed Mahogany Rush dates opening for the likes of The Amboy Dukes, The Chambers Brothers and Graham Central Station. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
